elementor-size-default\">Middle School Service Hours<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t\t<\/section>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<section data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jesus calls us to action in service of one another, \u201cLet us not love in word and in talk but in deed and in truth\u201d (John 3:18). Service to others is a main component of our faith and part of the mission of Saint Patrick Catholic School (SPCS). Middle school students at SPCS are required to perform 5 hours per semester (10 hours a year) of community service as part of the religion curriculum.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><strong><i>Service Requirement<\/i><\/strong><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perform five (5) hours of community service during each semester and maintain the included log. Service may include deeds at or for SPCS. Two good places to start when considering what to do are the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usccb.org\/beliefs-and-teachings\/how-we-teach\/new-evangelization\/jubilee-of-mercy\/the-corporal-works-of-mercy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corporal Works of Mercy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1aR5YlGOTiVJUakqSgQfWCVO_yztbCQH4\/view?usp=drive_link\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catholic Social Teaching<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Write a three-paragraph reflection paper each semester describing the service experience. Reflection papers will be applied to religion grades.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><strong><i>Service Explained<\/i><\/strong><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Service should be sacrificial in nature. Typically, this requires a sacrifice of time, but it also implies that the act is not something you would normally do or be expected to do.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Service can be both inside and outside of school.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Service is an act in which you don\u2019t get paid for your work or time.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Classroom projects are important but do not count towards the service requirement (i.e. class service field trips, St. Leo\u2019s Food collection during school hours, L\u2019Arche service during the school day with your class)\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Service must benefit the community at large. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A \u201cgood deed\u201d for one\u2019s family or relatives, an individual, or couple does not constitute \u201ccommunity service\u201d for this requirement.<\/span><\/i><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some examples of appropriate service opportunities include: Top Soccer at Bellarmine Preparatory High School, feeding the homeless with Keep \u2018em Warm and Fed (KEWF), working at L\u2019Arche Farm and Gardens outside of school hours, altar serving at Sunday\u00a0 Masses, delivering gifts and singing at the nursing home.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some examples that would NOT benefit the community at large include: household chores, babysitting, helping your relatives move.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Participation in the school choir with Mrs. Lewis does count towards service hours (before school rehearsals, performances in the greater community).<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You, along with your parents, are responsible for finding your own community service opportunities.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Service opportunities that may be available to the greater community can be shared and attended in groups with parents coordinating with the agency.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p>Service hours need to be completed during each semester. <span>Extra hours may not roll over to the next semester.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-15622c9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"15622c9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong><i>Student Service Reflection Requirements<\/i><\/strong><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Semester service reflections are due two weeks before the end of each semester. Your teacher will remind you and set the due date. Print and attach the log included below.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reflection Requirements\u00a0<\/span><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typed, Times New Roman, 12-point font<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outline for your reflection:<\/span><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First Paragraph (5-7 sentences)<\/span><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-checked=\"false\" aria-level=\"4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explain what you did and where.
