[CLOSING ENTRY] Captain’s Log: STARDATE 96790.10

Dear Friends,

As we reflect on our experience as event chairs, we are grateful for the generations of families, friends and businesses that continue to sponsor, donate, contribute and attend our largest fundraising effort – our annual REACH Auction.

Together we raised $314,000 for SAINT PATS: The Next Generation— thank you! We are especially grateful to the 2019 REACH Board, parent volunteers, event vendors, school and parish faculty for their efforts supporting REACH.

Please join us next year on Saturday, March 14, 2020, to kick off our 45th REACH Auction.

Live long and prosper,
Doug & Salina Jones
2019 REACH Auction Chairs

Thank you to all who participated in REACH 2019 as sponsors, contributors, guests and volunteers. Check out our photos from auction!

Pink Shoes and Old Desks
This afternoon, my daughter and her children were packing up to go home after their usual weekend visit, and I wistfully watched my tiny granddaughter walk away in her little pink shoes. These particular shoes are nearing the end of their useful time for her, as they have just about been outgrown. Strangely enough, it’s a bittersweet thought for me, since these same little pink shoes were worn by her mother thirty years ago. I had saved them, not only because they were sweet and filled with memories, but because they still had some miles left in them.
Tomorrow I’ll be back at work, and I will see the faces of students as they sit at the desks in our middle school. Students seem to be bigger these days than they were 45 years ago, when those desks were new, and they almost seem to be outgrowing them. Strangely enough, this is bittersweet to me as well. I wonder who in the past has sat in these seats? What new things did they learn? Where are those students now? Are they perhaps even reading this missive? And what are the stories behind some of the secretly etched graffiti that simply won’t wash away?
Nostalgia aside, it is clear that the time has come where we need to make changes. So many of our desks are falling apart with age and use. We need to provide updated, relevant furnishings for our school children, and I am very excited that our Fund an Item for the REACH 2019 auction will feature an opportunity to do so. This theme is a fun one, and one where we will get to tangibly see our generosity at work, as new faces fill new seats this coming fall.
We’ve done well by our classroom resources. We’ve used them until we can see the end of useful miles, but we’ve used them well.
With “using things well” in mind, I suppose now is also the time for me to search for some bigger pink shoes. There are more sweet memories to make.
